If your computer is assigned a dynamic IP address, it is still possible to access it remotely with a static name -- all you have to do is sign up for a service that maps that dynamic IP address to a static name.
This is especially great for people with broadband Internet access at home.
A typical url would look like http://yourname.hostname.com and likewise, a url to your music could be http://yourname.hostname.com/mp3s
Every time your computer is assigned a new IP address, agent software reports it back to a central server, ensuring that the name-to-IP mapping is always up-to-date. Neat stuff! For more info check out DynDNS.org |
